Q. |
Kasim,
I caught Todd's Bearsville show in December and on that leg of his tour you were on guitar and keyboards with Rachel on the bass. Since the new year I have seen video clips of Todd's shows and noticed that Rachel was gone and you were back on the bass. I'm going to another show soon and I wondered which instrument(s) you're playing on this leg of Todd's tour- thanks!
PS: Love the answers so far. Found out I tip too much at the NYC garages....

Dear Kristin,
Check the dates on the videos where I'm playing Bass...
I think you'll find they are all pre 10 - 2008
I've been playing Guitar and Key's with Todd since then.

hey,
i have a question. ok, hmm, the song summer's gone goes with a picture on your myspace player. it's a nice picture. i was wondering could you tell me where that picture was taken, and is it in your myspace pictures?

Nana,
I took that picture last year in Bremen Germany. We were staying at a hotel that was set off the main road and you had to walk on that trail to get to the street.
I have not put it in my Myspace pics just yet.

Q. |
Hi Kasim! Why do you always close your eyes when you sing during your solo shows?
Adele |
|
A. |
Dear Adele,
Good question!
I really have no idea why I do that.
All I know is when I start to sing, my eyes automatically shut.
Maybe I should start covering "Open My Eyes" !

What is the delightful scent that you wear? I noticed it at the Tampa solo show and the recent Clearwater TR show and I’d like to buy a bottle of it for my very own- what’s the name, or do you brew it up yourself in your basement? :-)

Sherrie,
I was getting fed up with working for other people in the Music Business so I decided to try my hand at a more lucrative endeavor. I set up a small Crystal Meth lab in my basement and found what I thought were directions on the Internet. After I started combining the ingredients, I thought something was amiss when something smelled really good. I decided to take a break but before I left my basement, some of the concoction splashed on my neck. I went outside and took a walk around the block and no fewer than a dozen people that I passed stopped me and asked me what was the wonderful fragrance I was wearing. Ever since I've decided a life of crime isn't half as satisfying as smelling good. |

Q. |
Hello Kasim! Here is your number one fan in Brazil (yes, there are others!) Daniel
I'd like to ask you a few questions:
Number one: What was it like to write and record the first songs with Todd? The ones I'm curious about are: "Magic Dragon Theatre", "The Martyr" and "Eternal Love". I'm asking this because I've heard many times that Todd didn’t give you that warm "WELCOME to Utopia" but these are key songs on those albums and your name (and voice) is all over the place. |
|
A. |
When I joined Utopia I had a few years of working and recording in studios in NYC. I didn't feel uncomfortable at all. The idea for the band at that time was for everyone to write as much as they could then throw ideas into a collective bucket and piece songs together from there. Since I was 'the new guy' I didn't want to push any particular idea or piece of music too hard. I chose to wait to see what the general direction was for that first album and then try and write something that might fit. Eternal Love was a song I wrote along with Roger Powell. Magic Dragon was all Todd and I think he just thought our voices sounded well together so wanted me to sing it with him. |
|
Q. |
Number two: Could you tell us some more Utopia famous fans (like the Bon Jovi guys) that you've been aware of? |
|
A. |
There are many ....
Jon Fields - Record Producer (Jonas Bros., Mylie Cyrus, Roone.....)
Desmond Child - Songwriter / Record Producer
Cheap Trick
Wheezer
That’s all I can think of now.

Q. |
Number three: Where in the world could I find the song "family reunion"? I always buy your material through TRBAZAAR and it's nowhere to be found.
|
|
A. |
I believe it's on it's way to you now.....

Q. |
Dear Kas,
Who is Phyllis? You have mentioned her in weblogs and others have too.
Deb
|
|
A. |
Dear Deb,
Phyllis is my imaginary friend. Didn't you have one when you were a child? Someone who never argued with you? Who always treated you good? Who was always there for you through thick and thin? Didn't judge or ridicule you?
In today's complicated, confusing and frustrating world, I think it's important to keep a 'certain special someone' close to you. Does it really matter if it's someone who doesn't really exist?
I say NO it doesn't.

Q. |
Dear Kasim ~ Can you tell me exactly what guitar effects pedals, guitars, and amplifier you're using for the Todd Rundgren Arena shows? Also, can you tell me how you came about choosing this amp/pedal/guitar combination? I'm curious, because I saw your set up and thought it was pretty interesting.
Thank you Kasim Sulton!

Dear Doug,
I use a Gas Pedal, A Brake Pedal, A Clutch and an Applause Pedal.
Have you found that Dog yet?

Q. |
Dear Kas,
How do you get to Carnegie Hall?????
Mary
|
|
A. |
Dear Mary,
The wiseguy answer would be 'Practice'
However, it depends on where you're coming from.
There are a number of ways the get there by Subway or Bus.
If on the Subway, I'd take the #1 and hop off at Columbus Circle... walk 3 blocks South and one block East.
By Bus you'd be on your own as I don't have a current schedule on hand.
Personally, I'd drive there and park at the Kinney Lot on 56th St., bet. 7th and 6th Ave. on the north side of 56th.
18.00 for the first half hour, 24.00 for the first hour and max 35.00 for anything after 2 hours (plus 18% Tax)
Van's and SUV's are charged 10.00 over that.
Don't tip more than 2 bucks and say thank you in Spanish.
Hope this helps!

Q. |
How come you never play any solo shows on the west coast? We would love to see one of your solo shows, but you never seem to play out here.....
Mindi
|
|
A. |
Dear Mindi,
Solo shows on the West Coast? I would love nothing more than to put together a string of dates from Seattle to San Diego.
I've been threatening doing just that for the past couple years and I think it might be time to explore the possibility further.
I'll be discussing the idea with my Parole Officer and if I can get him to grant me an Out Of State pass, remove the Ankle Bracelet and have the Judge sign off on it, I might be able to get there before years end.
If I started a petition, would you sign it?
