Album review
Kasim Sulton - All Sides 2007
History first, New York has always been home to singer/songwriter Kasim Sulton. Kasim was born in Brooklyn on December 8, 1956 and moved to Staten Island at the age of six, where he still lives today.
When I was asked to write the review I think I remember saying “you have to ask ?, Of course I will” famous last words, I really had no idea how or what to write. And I really want to do this justice. I also want you all to know this, firstly I am in no way a critic or have any kind of musical background. I am just a fan of his voice and musical talents. I am writing a review about my all time favorite singer/songwriter Kasim Sulton.
I know I have said it before and I will say it again “angel’s are jealous of his voice”! It is so distinctive, it simply moves through you, captivates and holds you in its powerful grasp. If ever you are looking for a body of work that incompases an artist’s true experiences and great Pop music that makes you want to get up and dance with every track, and pretty much in my opinion they all “should have been a hit” then you should definitely add All Sides to your collection. Kasim Sulton himself hand picked these songs from his 30 year career and a few new songs as well into this two disc compilation.
This Side - disc 1
Someone to love
Light’s on
Rather be blind
Give him up
Drivin me mad
Sacrifice
All the right reasons
Heaven’s girl
The one sure thing
Don’t break my heart
Oh no
In the name of love
Over for now
Sweet little accident
My year
Goodbye
All the right reasons, Heaven’s Girl and I’ll be your everything this is one of my favorite sections on this CD, when you have a group of songs in a row that really touch you, wow! what a combination, Kasim really knew what he was doing when he put this sequence together, his voice is just simply beautiful in I’ll be your everything, I like to think of these songs as taking you from frustration to, longing, desire, elation and love.
In the name of love, to me the first time I heard it, I automatically thought of Paul McCartney. To me you really hear the Beatles influence it is as if he had written it with Paul McCartney in mind. I enjoy listening to Kasim play piano and sing on this track there are no other two sweeter sounds.
Sweet little accident this is my song! I love the intro, the bass makes you get up and dance! And then by the chorus I always find my self doing a chacha! - this one truly should have been a hit.
That Side - disc 2
Are you happy now
Yellow cab
Minutes slipping past
I wanna be what I am
Sometimes love is a dangerous thing
Liar
Love is blind
Sweet little accident - demo version
Drivin’ me mad - demo version
Don’t break my heart - demo version
Love alone
My all time favorite Love alone from Kasim’s days with Utopia, this song really showcases Kasim’s singing voice - it is pure heaven to hear him sing and again I have to say it “angel’s are jealous of his voice!”
Also the first two tracks Are you happy now and Yellow Cab are two new songs for Kasim. I really enjoy listening to them, I just want to dance and sing along, I had the pleasure of hearing them both live at a solo concert of his and it was magic! I just couldn’t stay sitting down, I got up danced!
The demo versions of Sweet little accident, Drivin’ me mad and Don’t break my heart are a real treat to hear them in this state and I am not really sure which version I like better, the demo or finished product they are all great!
I couldn’t recommend All Sides any more to everyone. It is a must for your collection and it is what your ears have been longing for.
You will always have a fan in me!
