Kasim explains how the album came about below:
Sometime during the early 1990’s I got a phone call from my friend Earl Slick.
It had been a few years since I had spoken to him and after the perfunctory “how have you been’s” I was told the main reason for the call was to talk about a project he had been working on.
He was laying the ground work for a small boutique record label that was going to release rare and unused tracks by Artists he knew and worked with over his long career.
His question to me was simple ... Did I have any tracks floating around that hadn’t been released before? Songs that for one reason or another didn’t make it onto any album?
If I did, he would love to put them together as a collection of tracks, release and distribute it for me.
My previous solo effort was nearly 15 years prior and although my work with others continued to keep me from spending any serious amount of time on my own music, I still found myself writing and recording my own music as often as I could.
My answer was yes. I had lots of stuff that had never seen the light of day. There were demos and finished songs that I would love to be made available. After all, how long had it been since I released any material?
This was how The Basement Tapes came to life.
A phone call and a request.
The songs on this CD represent my early studio work and my home recordings that otherwise would be considered “less than perfect”.
However, it is just that “less than perfect(ness)” that makes it special to me.
From my first home demo of ‘This Must Be Love’ done on a four track Tascam tape recorder to a particular favorite, ‘Give Him Up’ which was to be on my second solo album for EMI, each song represents a little slice of my past.
‘My Year’ was recorded in a spare bedroom in an apartment I was renting and although the downstairs neighbors were deaf (true story), while I was mixing I was playing it so loudly, they rang my bell and motioned for me to turn it down.
Considering that these days most artists put out anything and everything they’ve ever done, I’m sure at one point or another I would have dug these bit’s and pieces up, dusted them off and parsed them out over time but I can’t think of a better way to have them all living together.
